Making incense, Mekong Delta, Vietnam

Posted by Aidan Hammond (Seoul, South Korea) on 22 March 2007 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

Travelling around one notices the smell of incense and the presence of incense burners everywhere. Just about every home and business has one. It took this woman about 2 seconds to make one. The actions were those of a craftsperson - refined to the most minimal movements necessary.
The incense was mixed with sawdust and a kind of glue. The stick is rolled into the glue and incense, and this mixture is then rolled in the sawdust. It was quite interesting to watch - behind her was a pile almost 4 meters high of bundled incense sticks.
