Joinery, Gyeongbokgun Palace, Seoul, Korea

Posted by Aidan Hammond (Seoul, South Korea) on 11 September 2007 in Architecture and Portfolio.

I've visited this palace several times but have never looked carefully up at the cavernous ceiling. This time, there was enough light coming in to light up this joinery. The colour and patterns here are just amazing. The horizontal post is about 30cm on each side, the 'waves' carry on around the top of the wall. This kind of decoration is impressive when you consider that someone must climb about 15 meters and paint such intricate patterns on the woodwork.
This palace is the main royal palace in Seoul.
